Hypnotherapy can help with procrastination
By Keith Travis
I read that Jennifer Saunders is undergoing hypnotherapy sessions in a bid to stop her procrastinating.
The Absolutely Fabulous star is at the time of writing this trying to write the script for a big screen version
of her acclaimed comedy and has sought out professional help after struggling to focus full-time on the
Speaking at The Independent Bath Literature Festival, she revealed, "I'm writing it (screenplay) now; I have a
deadline for the treatment.
"I am actually having treatment, hypnotherapy, for procrastination. It's true, what my hypnotist said was to
get rid of the backpack of negativity."
Jennifer confirmed earlier this year that she was working on the movie after coming under pressure from co-star
Joanna Lumley. The pair played booze-swilling socialites Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone on the cult series from
1992 to 2005 and returned for several special episodes to coincide with the 2012 London Olympic games.
If you procrastinate like Jennifer, you may not need to write a script for a movie, but by putting things off
you could be holding yourself back in some way.
So why do we procrastinate
There are thought to be three types of procrastinators
Arousal types, or thrill-seekers, who wait to the last minute for the euphoric rush.
Avoiders, who may be avoiding fear of failure or even fear of success, but in either case are very concerned
with what others think of them; they would rather have others think they lack effort than ability.
Decisional procrastinators, who cannot make a decision. Not making a decision absolves procrastinators of
responsibility for the outcome of events
I generally see "the avoiders" and when I have a chat to them quite often I find it is because of fear of
failure due to some incident that happened in their childhood.
If you had a big disapointment in your childhood such as not passing an exam that everyone including you
thought you would pass, that could be the type of reason for procrastination. Your subconscious is saying to
you "You know what happens when you expect something good to happen, you finish up hurt,so don't do it then you
wont get that bad feeling again"
Sometimes you could think that if you do something, then that will put more pressure on you than if you put it
off. For instance if you are worried about the extra responsibilities connected with a new job you may put off
applying even though you could do the job really well.
However and why ever you procrastinate, you will find that hypnotherapy can really help you to overcome those
old fears and avoidance tactics. You can start to have a better more fulfilling life, all it takes is the first
step and you have just taken that by reading this!
